Ed Cefalu began painting as a hobby in the year 2000. Without any formal training, Ed works primarily with acrylic paints as well as occasionally mounting various artifacts onto canvas and incorporating them into the paintings themselves. More recently, Ed has had a tendency to use pallet knives over the use of paint brushes to achieve a thicker texture.
His paintings have been described as mixed-media, abstract expressions that touch on various aspects of human passion, spirit and emotion. He achieves various "moods" represented by his choice of vibrant colors and describes the actual “process” which takes place while painting from an original concept drawn out through to a completed piece as an "Exploration in Therapy for the Soul".
Although, initially inspired by Van Gogh , particularly by his use of color and thick textures, he says most of his inspiration stems simply from the observation of other artists techniques while visiting local studios, lofts and exhibits in Los Angeles , San Francisco and in San Jose .
